Today, July 10th, marks the birthday of Nikola Tesla, a vastly underrated technologist and, until recently, one of the more obscure scientists of the modern age. Tesla’s greatest impact on contemporary culture lay in the innovations he applied to electricity distribution which lead to the adoption of the alternating current (AC) technology used by the system of power grids around the world. AC power distribution fulfills the need for today’s society to consume massive quantities of energy.
In nearly every way, Tesla Motors’ progressive approach to engineering automobiles reflects this spirit of innovation and non-traditional thinking. Much as Tesla was dismissed by Thomas Edison, his former boss, as brilliant but impractical, today’s fossil fuel, combustion engine industrial complex has tried to dismiss green technologies for the open road as novel but impractical. Yet, even as the traditionalists ponder where their next barrel of oil is coming from, Tesla Motors is surging forward into the future.
