An enterprising Chinese man found a way to make money off of his Tesla before it was even licensed to be on the road in the Middle Kingdom.
Zhang Jianling, who hails from the Zhejiang province, bought his Tesla in Hong Kong about six months ago and quickly saw a return on his investment when he used the car as an attraction for his wedding car company.
The Tesla, which was the first of its kind on Chinese mainland, was first borrowed by a real estate company for a show, which inspired Zhang to look for other ways to recoup his investment.
“Tesla was a rarity on the mainland,” Zhang said. “They want its reputation to attract more people.”
Zhang used the Tesla in around 10 shows a month. He earned $24,000 for one show alone, ultimately recouping more than the $400,000 he paid for the car.
But even Zhang knows his Tesla’s time in the sun may be over. Deliveries of the popular electric car began this week in China, so his sexy electric car isn’t going to be a novelty for long.
“More Teslas will come to China, so mine won’t stay popular.”
