Tesla received the ultimate pop culture compliment Tuesday when it was brought up on the most recent episode of Fox’s musical juggernaut “Glee.”
On the episode, titled “Bash,” Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Sam (Chord Overstreet) reignite their high school flame when both meet up again in New York, where the show has shifted all of its action since most of the kids graduated from their Lima, OH alma mater.
The ultimate diva, Mercedes is in New York recording an R&B album and Sam, ever the dopey “trouty mouth,” is trying to become a model. At a restaurant, Sam shows up where Mercedes is holding court with two of her background singers.
One is named Tesla, which Sam takes as an opportunity to stupidly ask: “What is it with you black girls being named after expensive cars?” She informs him that she was named after light bulb inventor Nicola Tesla, not the sexy electric car. Embarrassed, Sam reminds Mercedes that he knows she was actually named after Academy Award-winner Mercedes Ruehl.
After Sam leaves the girls chastise Mercedes for dating a white guy, telling her that her black audience won’t buy albums from a sister who dips her feet in the Anglo pond.
So, Mercedes dumps Sam.
But then flamboyantly gay Kurt (Chris Colfer) becomes a victim of a hate crime and the entire gang must rally at his bedside in the hospital. Obviously, this makes Mercedes rethink her feelings about Sam.
But first, she sings a song about it while he dreamily watches. Then they make out.
Oh and Kurt? He’s OK. He sang a song about it too!
Perhaps one day when they all become famous like Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), they’ll all drive back to Lima in their very own Teslas. We can hear the songs they are planning already.
