Saleen Automotive Inc., the muscle car tuner famed for its high performance Mustang variants, has announced plans to “produce one of the most compelling Tesla’s to ever hit the roadway”. CEO Steve Saleen noted that he wanted to bring “attention to the vehicle that has defined the sports car in the rapidly growing electric car sector.”
Details are hard to find, but many are anxiously speculating on how Saleen will further enhance the Model S into an electric supercar given the 416hp induction motor already present in the P85. Saleen has promised renderings as their R&D work progresses and a spec sheet detailing proposed enhancements will be circulated soon.
Some wonder why Saleen is venturing into the EV market. Why not continue to focus on their core business of fossil fuel chugging V-8s and all the raw power they command? Saleen himself answers: “electric vehicles are not a fad. That is a trend”; adding separately, “Tesla’s values are not a departure from our core values of elite power, style, and performance. I have admired their craftsmanship.”
This reinforces how undeniably disruptive Tesla has been in the marketplace; gearheads may yield to tuners in the near future.
