Ford has had the stronghold on the auto industry for 32 straight years, with its Ford F-150 being the top selling vehicle.
Beyond that cars.com named the F-150 its top American-made vehicle last year. The ranking is based on where parts come from, sales and where the car is assembled.
But if Tesla’s $4-6 billion Gigafactory planned for Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico or Texas becomes a reality, Americans might soon thank Tesla when they buy American.
Morgan Stanley says that if the lithium-ion battery plant happens, it’s likely Tesla could become the number one American-made car. Morgan Stanley estimates that 90 percent of the parts used to build Tesla’s will come from America, compared to Ford’s 75 percent.
Tesla estimates the Gigafactory will employ up to 6,500 people and produce more lithium-ion batteries than the entire industry does by 2020.
Now that’s a whole new way to shop American!
