China is upping the ante for drivers who want to go green.
According to a report from ValueWalk, consumers who buy a Model S will save $15,000 on a license plate.
The cost of a licence plate at a Shanghai licence plate auction can often cost more than the car itself, which has limited the number of drivers because they can’t afford the car and the license plate.
Shanghai limits car purchases by putting quotas on registrations.
“Whenever there’s a restriction of new car purchases through the quota system, there is always a big impact on lower-price cars like the ones we make,” Lawrence Ang, executive director of Geely Automobile Holdings, told Bloomberg News.
China is known to have a pollution problem, so this smoking deal may be one way to combat that problem.
Or, they just like Tesla, which is good since CEO Elon Musk has made a big splash in the country, saying he hopes to be making cars there in the next three to four years.
